The introduction of the black hole increases the speed of the cuts and the pace of the film increases which gives the film a sense of urgency and threat. At the introduction of the black hole a dark, bassy sound rings out and drowns out all of the office noises and focusing the viewer on the mysterious object.
Within the first 40 seconds the typical stereotype of an office worker has been set and the films plot develops very quickly from the introduction of the black hole. The darkened filter contributes to the mise en scene 0f the film by darkening the whole film and the diagetic noise incorporated in the background turns a dull office setting into a dark and creepy setting for a short film. The drained looking office worker is positioned under a soft light in order to highlight the bags under his eyes and create dark silhouette which instantly gives the viewer a negative first impression of the man, the use of a filter helps to also darken the film. The first scene has an establishing shot that shows the office space and has the dull, repetitive noise of computers and photocopiers playing in order to create a flat and lifeless scene.
The most important factor in making the black hole a very good short film is the idea of human greed, this is portrayed cleverly and incorporates typical stereotypes to help create the average bored office worker that a large number of people can relate to. As the short film was only 3 minutes long, the use of a simple idea was essential and I feel that the film would not have been as successful if it was any longer as this idea could easily become over complicated. Despite having no dialogue the simple idea of a ‘black hole’ was developed with effective use of camera angles, music and keeping everything fairly basic. The black hole is a simple morality tale but excels in delivering an excellent final piece due to the overall quality in which the film was delivered.
